On November 11–12, the University of Georgia invites you to a conference titled “Religion and Undemocratic Governance: Freedom and Faith in Response to Repression and Oppression,” which will bring together academics, human rights advocates, and religious leaders.
The conference will focus on the following key topics:
Freedom of religion and belief and mechanisms for its protection;
The situation of religious minorities under undemocratic regimes;
The role of religious communities in protecting human dignity and civil society;
Historical experiences of authoritarian rule, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
The conference aims to bring together academics, human rights advocates, and religious leaders to examine the multifaceted role of religion in totalitarian, authoritarian, and other undemocratic political systems from the perspectives of theology, religious studies, history, law, and the social sciences.
Particular attention will be paid to the significant role that faith and religion have played in the past, as well as their potential to protect human dignity, conscience, and freedom in the future. Alongside academic discussions, the conference will provide a platform for practitioners and religious leaders to share their experiences and human rights initiatives.
