Conference of the Samshvilde Archaeological Expedition was held at the University of Georgia

 

On December 19, the annual reporting conference of the Samshvilde Archaeological Expedition was held at the University of Georgia. Within the framework of the meeting, participants and expedition researchers delivered presentations on the year’s work, covering the following topics:

  • Updated topography of the Samshvilde fortress and the latest discoveries;

  • Results of archaeological research in the Sioni district;

  • Findings from the comprehensive study of bioarchaeological materials from the Samshvilde settlement site;

  • Research on zooarchaeological materials discovered at Samshvilde and their significance;

  • Conservation and restoration of metal artifacts found at the Samshvilde settlement site;

  • Modified horn and bone artifacts discovered at Samshvilde and their analysis;

  • The Mtkvari–Araks cultural site of Samshvilde.

As part of the conference, a public discussion was held focusing on the significance of the discovered facts and sources for Georgian history as a scholarly field. According to the different thematic directions, the specifics of the work carried out and the techniques used by the expedition’s research team were discussed.

 

For years, the Samshvilde Archaeological Expedition of the University of Georgia has played an important role in discovering and classifying key facts of Georgia’s history.
