Professor Amiran Gamkrelidze is a physician, researcher, public health expert and professor at the University of Georgia, School of Health Sciences, currently serving as Director of the Global and European Health Education and Study Institute and Scientific Adviser of Georgian Center of Allergy and Immunology. He holds an MD and PhD in medical sciences. He is a distinguished global public health leader with more than four decades of experience in public health policy, global health, allergy and clinical immunology, and health system governance. From 2013 to 2022, Professor Gamkrelidze served as Director General of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia, playing a central role in strengthening national public health preparedness and response. Previously, he held senior governmental positions, including Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia (2001–2004) and First Deputy Minister (1997–2001). He was a visiting professor at the UiT Arctic University of Norway (Tromsø, Norway) and Tbilisi State Medical University. His previous roles include Director of the National Healthcare Management Center, academic appointments at the University of Linköping in Sweden, and the Institute of Clinical Immunology at Friedrich Schiller University in Germany. Professor Gamkrelidze has extensive international experience, having worked as WHO Country Program Coordinator in Georgia (2005–2013) and as a long-standing participant in WHO governing bodies, expert committees, and policy initiatives, including contributions to the WHO European Health 2020 policy. He was a member of the WHO European Advisory Committee for Health Research (EACHR), served on the WHO Standing Committee of the Regional Committee for Europe (2015-2018) and have been a Chair (2018). Additionally, he was a member of the WHO Global Coordination Mechanism on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, Innovation for Non-communicable Diseases, expert of WHO Europe meetings on Social Determinants of Health (2006-2007), WHO Europe Technical Advisory Group member on the development of the Strategy and Action Plan on health emergency preparedness, response, and resilience (Preparedness 2.0) in the WHO European Region 2023-2024, Concord-Lancet Global Commission on Cancer since 2024, and a ,ember of Independent Expert Group on the Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) Accountability Index (WHO European Region), including 2026. Dr. Gamkrelidze has been an active participant in numerous global health forums and has served as a keynote speaker at numerous international and national conferences and academic institutions in the UK, USA, France, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy, and beyond. Dr. Gamkrelidze serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including the World Allergy Organization Journal, Allergo Journal (Germany), Georgian Medical News, and the Georgian Respiratory Journal. He is also a member of prestigious professional associations such as the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the German Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, and the Georgian Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology. His academic, scientific, and expert work focuses on global and public health, in healthcare field, oriented on COVID-19 response, health systems strengthening, hepatitis C elimination, non-communicable diseases, tobacco, environmental health, allergy and clinical immunology, and health policy. Dr. Gamkrelidze has authored or co-authored over 150 scientific publications.
