Eliso Kvavadze was born on 8 August 1948 in the village of Kvemo Magharo of the Sighnaghi region. She graduated from the Russian secondary school of the village of Ulyanovka, belonging to the same region. In 1967 she became a student of the Biogeographical Faculty of the Tbilisi A.S. Pushkin Pedagogical Institute. She became the Lenin scholarship-holder for her social activity and excellence in study. In 1971 Eliso Kvavadze graduated from the above-mentioned institute with honours diploma. In October 1971 she became an aspirant of the Faculty of Geography of the Moscow Lomonosov State University. She graduated from this university in 1975. In 1976 she defended her candidate thesis “The History of the Nature of the Colchian Lowland in Holocene” before the Scientific Board of the same university and she acquired the degree of the candidate of the geographical science. In December 1976 Eliso Kvavadze was enrolled into the Institute of Palaeobiology of the Georgian Academy of Sciences as a junior scientific researcher, where she continues her work up to now. In 1990 she defended her doctoral thesis “Actual Palynological Aspects in the Holocene Biostratigraphy and Palaeogeography of the Mountainous Regions of the Transcaucasus” and she received the doctoral degree in geology and mineralogy. Since 2006 the Institute of Palaeobiology was united under the aegis of the Georgian National Museum. Eliso Kvavadze represents the leading scientific worker of the museum. In the course of her 45-year-old scientific activity Eliso Kvavadze participated into publication of 10 monographs and atlases. She was the author of over 250 scientific papers published both in our country and abroad in high-impact factor journal ‘Science’. They deal with spinning of ancient flax thread in the Dzudzuana Cave and production of flax textile already 30 000 years ago. In 2009 this find was included into the ten top discoveries of the world. In 1989 Eliso Kvavadze was awarded the state prize for the best publications in the course of the Georgian-Polish collaboration. On the grounds of this collaboration she became the Mianovski scholarship-holder. She carried out researches in the Institute of Botany of the Krakow Academy of Sciences together with Polish palaeobotanists in the course of 6 months. The project resulted into a great publication concerning the palynological spectra of the present-day beech forests in the Caucasian and Carpathian mountains. The article was published in the Polish journal ‘Acta Palaeobotanica’. Eliso Kvavadze’s contribution into identification of the history of wine-making in Georgia is great. On the basis of her investigations, it was revealed that humans of the Neolithic Period were making wine already 8000 years ago. In 2016 this discovery was also included into the list of the prominent 10 discoveries. Researches of Eliso Kvavadze revealed ancient traces of apiculture, which were identified in the materials of the Neolithic sites. Great success was reached in the course of palynological investigation of materials obtained from the Neolithic sites. The study of twenty sites dated from the period in question showed peculiarities of farming activity of the ancient humans as well as surrounding ecological conditions. The palaeo diet, palaeo diseases, traditions, clothes, and other issues of lifestyle in the Early Bronze Age have been defined. She won 5 grants of the Shota Rustaveli Scientific Foundation in the course of last ten years. She was also the winner of the grants of the German Volkswagen and the Ministry of Education of Germany. In the 1990s she received the grants of the Soros Foundation and INTAS.
