Residency programs
Introduction
The residency program within the School of Health Sciences of the University of Georgia is intended for graduated specialists with higher medical education, for graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, who have passed the post-graduate qualification exam. Enrollment in residency is annually based on the competition announced by the institutions implementing the residency program. The prerequisite for successful completion of the program is the knowledge and skills acquired at the stage of pre-diploma medical education. Promotion of the training of highly qualified specialists with state accredited programs of post-diploma professional training in various specialties of medicine in accordance with the legislation in force in the country.
Goals of the Residency Program:
- Professional Development: To produce well-rounded medical professionals equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to excel in their respective specialties.
- Intensive Learning: To ensure residents deepen both their theoretical and practical knowledge beyond pre-diploma education.
- Skill Enhancement: To develop and refine residents' clinical, practical, and profile-specific competencies, enabling them to provide optimal patient care.
- Progressive and Systematic Training: To offer a training environment that is diverse, progressive, and systematic, allowing for gradual mastery of complex medical procedures and practices.
Objectives of the Residency Program:
- Theory Application: Residents should be able to integrate and apply the theoretical knowledge gained during pre-diploma education to real-world clinical scenarios.
- Clinical Proficiency: Residents should demonstrate excellence in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and execution, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
- Competency Development: By the end of the residency, residents should have mastered the profile-specific competencies necessary for their chosen specialty.
- Research and Continuous Learning: Encourage residents to engage in medical research and promote the importance of continuous learning throughout their careers.
- Interprofessional Collaboration: Equip residents with the skills to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Ethical and Patient-Centered Care: Instill in residents the importance of practicing medicine ethically and with a focus on patient-centered care.
- Adaptability: Prepare residents to adapt to the rapidly evolving medical landscape by exposing them to diverse training scenarios and encouraging flexibility in problem-solving.
- Communication: Enhance residents' communication skills, ensuring they can effectively communicate with patients, families, and fellow healthcare professionals.
The goals and objectives aim to provide a clear roadmap for the residency program, ensuring it aligns with the overarching purpose of training competent and skilled medical professionals. These can be periodically reviewed and updated to remain relevant to the evolving needs of the medical community and patients.
Currently, the Dermato-Venerology Residency Program is aligned with our international partners (Yeditepe, Istinye, Medipol residency programs in Turkey).
Residency Program Provision
"University of Georgia" School of Health Sciences residency program
A person who has obtained 170 points or more in the unified post-graduate qualification exam and has a state certificate confirming the applicant has the right to participate in the competition for alternative post-graduate education.
The following have the right to participate in the competition: a) a graduated medical doctor who graduated from an accredited higher medical educational institution, who, according to the established rules, passed the unified post-diploma qualification exam and received a certificate of specialty seeker and/or a relevant certificate. b) a certified doctor-specialist who wants to obtain the right of independent medical activity in a new medical specialty; c) A person who has received higher medical education abroad and his diploma is recognized in the manner established by the legislation of Georgia.
Head of the residency program - Elza Nikoleishvili
Doctor of Medicine,PhD. With 13 years of experience in Pediatrics. In 2014-2019, she was the Head of the Pharmacy Department, Associate Professor of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Georgia. Since 2021, she is a professor, Head of the Residency in Medicine. She still direct the undergraduate and graduate programs in Pharmacy. She provides courses in pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy, also has been engaged in scientific-pedagogical work for years. She has patented works in Healthcare education filed. Her current scientific-practical interest is focused on the introduction of patient-oriented pharmaceutical care paradigm, development of clinical pharmacy and pharmacovigilance in Georgia and healthcare education as well. Professor Elsa Nikoleishvili is actively involved in scientific research in Public Health, has active doctoral (PhD) students who work in Oral Health, Primary Care, Healthcare education and other active fields; She actively participates in educational and professional activities and trainings in Georgia and internationally. She herself is the author of short-term continuous educational courses. Currently, she is working on the creation and accreditation of the Doctoral Program in Medicine. She is the author of more than twenty scientific publications.

Professor of the University of Georgia, “Kanveni” Doctor of Dermatology and Venereology at the National Center of Dermatology and Venerology. Has experience in human resource management, organizational development, theoretical and practical work with students and residents, conducting and creating trainings.

The residency program "Dermato-Venereology" is intended for qualified specialists with higher medical education, graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, who wish to become dermato-venerologists.
The duration of the residency program includes 3 years (33 months). Our main goal is for the resident to develop both clinical and interventional competencies during residency training. To develop the skills of a doctor, to provide appropriate/necessary assistance to the patient, which will be facilitated by highly qualified medical bases and professional module leaders.
