About the Academy
The Georgian-American Film Academy at the University of Georgia was established on the example of the New York Film Academy in order to enable the community living in the country and the region to master audio-visual storytelling at the highest level with real involvement in the filmmaking process and as a result, receive not only the highest standard of knowledge but also to create a personal portfolio, thus receiving excellent practical experience.
The Georgian American Film Academy is the only one in Georgia and the region where people interested in filmmaking will be able to acquire excellent practical knowledge in all aspects of film production - from filming to distribution. The state-of-the-art modern equipment available at the Academy for the needs of cinematography, editing, sound or lighting, gives the students a unique opportunity to master the profession not only theoretically, but also by direct involvement in the filmmaking process. With the mentorship of professional practitioners and the knowledge gained from them, students will be able to establish themselves in the industry with confidence.
What will you learn?
The Georgian American Film Academy offers Master’s Degree in Filmmaking as well as a 12 week Certificate Course, both of which allow students to delve into audio-visual-story-telling. Students will work on filmmaking, advertising or other types of video content. Students will learn the techniques of screen writing and will act as directors, cameraman and film editors in the process of shooting a short movie. They will get to know the specifics of every specialist in the filmmaking team. It is exactly this knowledge and experience that will aid them in becoming well-rounded professionals who know very well the full process of filmmaking. Most importantly, students will gain important professional skills and will be able to build a professional network with fellow students and lecturers.
Authors
The author of the Filmmaking Program is the famous Georgian filmmaker – Producer, Screenwriter and Director – Mirza Davitaia, who worked on various European film studios since 1993. He produced the motion picture “Anton” directed by the Oscar nominated Director – Zaza Urushadze. The film has received worldwide recognition. Mirza Davitaia also produced the Hollywood blockbuster – “5 Days of August”. In 2016 he created the graphical novel – The Knights in the Panther Skin”, which received the nomination of the Year’s Best Literary Work. In 2020-2021, Mirza Davitaia worked as a producer and screenwriter of the Georgian-Ukrainian film – “Fortress of Khajibey”.
Leading professionals of the film industry, professional with great experience have also been involved in the process of the making of the program. As filmmakers, they know best what a student needs for a successful career in the field. The program was created based in the study of the job market, therefore the curriculum and the practical component fully correspond to the needs and requirements as well as knowledge deficit on the market.
